(E) The Comma of Pythagoras | Emily Townsend, RPT, Boston, MA Chapter
The mathematical foundations of temperament tuning are elegantly simple yet remain an illusive mystery to many in our trade. We'll use simple, elementary-level math to understand partials, interval relationships, why some intervals are tuned wide, and why some intervals are tuned narrow. This will be an upbeat, energetic class including time travel to ancient Greece, a visit from Donald Duck, aural examples from a real piano, and musical recordings comparing unequal temperaments.
(A) Fazioli Capo d'astro and Duplex Scale Tuning | Job Wijnands and Rick Baldassin, RPT, Fazioli Pianoforti
The class focuses on the special capo d'astro used on Fazioli pianos which is adjustable, as well on the back Duplex scale which is tunable.
(E) How Don Tunes | Don Mannino, RPT, South Bay, CA Chapter
We’ll start by discussing Don’s general approach to tuning: how to prep the piano for tuning, how to measure and make a tuning file using RCT, the importance of various octave stretch types in his tunings, and tuning the treble, especially the unisons. Two-period class.
(E) How Pianos Are Tuned by Ear | Dan Levitan, RPT, New York City Chapter
Aural piano tuners monitor changes taking place in the frequencies of the strings they’re tuning by listening to changes taking place in the sounds of intervals that include them. In this class, we’ll explore the aspects of those sounds that piano tuners pay attention to, and manipulate, as they work.
(I) Intermediate Tuning Theory & Aural Gauge Tools | Maggie Jusiel, RPT & Tim Mainland, Roanoke, VA Chapter
This class starts with a harmonic series overview before covering interval ratios, coincident partials, wide versus narrow intervals, beats, musical commas, why we temper, and inharmonicity. It continues with aural gauge tools (aka checks), how they work, and several examples that can be demonstrated on a piano. Two-period class.
(B) One Way to Tune the Bass Using the Stretch Interval Set | Mark Cerisano, RPT, Montreal, QC Chapter
Tuning the bass has always been a challenge. ETDs have trouble hearing the low frequencies; these lower strings have the most audible partials, and inharmonicity means bass intervals will always be beating somewhere. The stretch interval set is one way to tune the bass that has easy-to-follow instructions.
(E) Professional Pin Setting | Dan Levitan, RPT, New York City Chapter
Find out how to achieve bulletproof stability on any piano by taking advantage of the clear separation of turning and tilting forces on a tuning pin made possible by C-shaped tuning hammers such as the Levitan Professional.
(E) Tune-Refine-Confirm: A System for Developing Aural Skills | Jason Cassel, RPT, Salt Lake City, UT
Have you ever felt guilty for not knowing how to tune a piano entirely by ear? Or maybe you passed your RPT exams and never tuned aurally again? This class will equip you with a system for developing your aural skills “on-the-go.” Featuring interactive quizzes that allow you to submit answers live from your phone!
(I) Tuning Ergonomics Masterclass | Timothy Barnes, RPT, Charlotte, NC Chapter
This two-period class is a traditional hands-on technical masterclass. The instructor will work directly with class participants to identify challenges and constructively improve each participant’s tuning hammer technique, tuning stability and body ergonomics. We will also be addressing the physical limitations of each participant’s personal tuning hammer and unique body ergonomics (heighth, wingspan, hand size, prior injuries, dominant hand preference, right/left ambidextrous, and preferred position, sitting or standing.)
(I) Tuning Mechanism, Hammer Technique, and Hammers | Baoli Liu, RPT, Madison, WI Chapter & Fengsheng Chen, RPT, New Jersey Chapter
Gain deeper insights into the piano tuning mechanism with homemade equipment and devices demonstrating pin flex and twisting. Explore string friction, various hammer techniques to enhance stability, and methods to minimize strain. Beneficial for tuners at all levels, with a focus on intermediate and advanced skills.
(E) Tuning Tutoring | Duncan Peterson, RPT, Salt Lake City, UT Chapter & Vince Myrkalo, RPT, Central OK Chapter
There is no better way to improve your tuning than one-on-one tutoring by a master tuner. Private tutoring will benefit you no matter what your skill level. With outstanding tuning tutors, you’ll find a universe of tuning knowledge to explore. This all takes place in a one-on-one format lasting 90 minutes. Only 18 slots available. Fee: $140. You must pre-register by calling (913) 432-9975.
(B) Where to Listen | Nathan Mills, RPT, Augusta, GA Chapter
To better understand aural tuning, we will learn to recognize intervals, and the aural checks needed for those most commonly used. We will tune a sliding 4th temperament and spread it through the midrange. You will leave knowing where your "ear needs to be" for each step of the process.
Voicing & Concert Prep

(I) Foundations of Tone in the New York Steinway | Daniel DeBiaiso, RPT, Steinway & Sons
Needles and lacquer often occupy the majority of the conversation whenever voicing is discussed, but only represent a fraction of the work required to produce a quality result. This class will focus on the details of those foundational elements when voicing New York Steinway hammers before outlining traditional voicing techniques.
(B) If it's Broken, Fix It! | Norman Vesprini, RPT, Northeastern Indiana Tri-State Chapter
